Elon Musk\u2019s message placed the wider adoption of electric vehicles at the centre of the argument.<\/p>\n<h2>Growing the market beyond one company<\/h2>\n<p>The position expressed then was that Tesla could not transform transport alone. A less defensive approach to intellectual property could encourage a shared, evolving technology platform that would also help other electric-vehicle manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>Good faith was an essential condition. Describing the decision simply as cancelling patents or offering technology without conditions would change its meaning: Tesla was not announcing the disappearance of its rights.<\/p>\n<h2>A commitment to wider electric-vehicle adoption<\/h2>\n<p>The industrial purpose was to shift attention from defending each individual solution towards growing the sector. The announcement did not prove that competitors had already adopted the technology or guarantee collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>In context, the decision showed a company interested in expanding the market in which it operated.
