This guide explains how to prepare USB storage, save an incident and find footage without accidentally deleting it.

The instructions are based on the current Italian Model 3 Owner’s Manual. Ports, menus and features can vary with the vehicle, year and software: always compare the steps with your own car’s manual before following them.

In this guide

Prepare USB storage

Use Tesla Dashcam

Configure Sentry Mode

Keep and view footage

Checks before driving away

1. Prepare USB storage for Tesla Dashcam

Start with a drive dedicated to video recordings. The manual specifies at least 64 GB and storage capable of sustained video writing: a USB stick that works for small documents is not automatically suitable for continuous recording.

On the Model 3 vehicles described in the current manual, the video connection is the USB-A port in the glovebox. The console and rear USB-C ports do not serve this function. On older models, check the location in the relevant manual.

Back up any files already on the drive.

Connect the drive to the correct port.

Open Controls > Safety > Format USB Drive.

Only confirm after checking the drive: formatting erases all its data.

Preparing the drive in the car creates the required folder structure. For manual preparation, Tesla describes using exFAT and a folder named TeslaCam in the root directory; NTFS is not supported. Do not mistake a formatting issue for a camera fault.

2. Use Tesla Dashcam and save an incident

Dashcam records while you drive and stores footage locally on the drive, without sending it to Tesla. Its menu lets you choose automatic saving of detected events, or manually save the last ten minutes using the Dashcam icon. An option to save footage when you honk is also available.

Automatic detection does not guarantee that every situation will be saved. If an incident matters, save the footage as soon as you can do so safely. Start by checking the icon: recording, paused and processing indicate different states.

Pause recording before unplugging the drive. To watch footage in the car, use the viewer while parked. The manual also describes encryption: protected content requires the original vehicle or the Tesla account associated with the recording, following the specified procedure.

Recording icon. Image: Tesla.

3. Sentry Mode: what to check when parking

Sentry Mode monitors the parked, locked car; it does not replace Dashcam during a journey. It is off by default and must be configured separately. You can consider exclusions for Home, Work and Favourites, remembering that an excluded location will not be monitored in the same way.

To have video footage, you need USB storage configured for Dashcam. Without it, a notification does not mean there is a recoverable video. Some events may be recorded without triggering the alarm: sound alone is therefore not a reliable check that the system is working.

Monitoring consumes energy and is not infallible protection against theft or damage. The manual notes that it is disabled when Low Power Mode takes effect. Consider your available range when leaving the car for a long time.

4. Keeping footage: a useful routine

When retrieving an incident, create a folder with the date and a clear description, such as “supermarket car park”. Keep a copy of the original files before editing or sharing an extract. This makes the material easy to find without relying solely on the drive used every day.

Avoid trial-and-error formatting if the drive contains an important incident. First check which files you can read and back them up. If menus behave differently after an update, also consult Tesla’s official software updates page and the release notes in your car.

5. A quick check before driving away

Storage connected to the port intended for video.

Dashcam in the intended state, with no warnings ignored.

Important footage saved and copied before formatting.

Sentry Mode configured for the actual parking location.

For more practical advice, visit Teslhub’s Guides and Tutorials.
