The two cars had played a major role in the brand’s growth. Falling sales were an obvious explanation, but the original June 2026 report described a broader account from chief designer Franz von Holzhausen and engineering vice-president Lars Moravy. It said the decision had been planned roughly eighteen months earlier, bringing together questions of platform development and factory space. The interview account, rather than a new first-hand conversation, is the basis of this article.

A platform conceived in 2008

Model S was developed from work dating to 2008 and reached customers in 2012. Tesla introduced many hardware and software changes afterwards, while retaining the underlying lineage of the platform.

The report attributed to Moravy the explanation that evolving assessment protocols, including those of Euro NCAP and IIHS, made continued development increasingly demanding. Tesla had made repeated structural improvements, but a more comprehensive update for future requirements would have required substantial investment, described as hundreds of millions of dollars. Test protocols and legal requirements are distinct: this account did not establish that the existing vehicles had suddenly become unlawful or failed a particular safety test.

Space was needed for Optimus

A second consideration was the need for manufacturing space for Tesla’s humanoid robot. As the team considered the cost of updating the Model S and Model X lines, Tesla was also looking for a place to establish Optimus pilot production. Reallocating the Fremont area offered an alternative to a major reinvestment in the two flagship-car programmes.

According to the interview account, the two needs fitted together: the space question and the cost of renewing the vehicle lines made the industrial decision easier to understand.

An increasingly autonomous direction

The broader context was Tesla’s ambition to expand beyond car manufacturing into AI, autonomous vehicles and robotics. Model S and Model X were among its oldest vehicle programmes. Although repeatedly updated, they reflected a different starting point from a new architecture conceived around driverless operation. That was a strategic assessment, not proof that every car based on a newer architecture could operate without supervision.

With Robotaxi development and greater investment in Optimus, the report described Tesla concentrating resources on newer programmes intended to support that direction. Development ambition remained separate from the validation, approvals and commercial execution still needed.

Was it necessarily the final goodbye?

The article cited approximately 755,000 combined deliveries over the two programmes’ lives, including more than 400,000 Model S and more than 300,000 Model X vehicles. Those rounded lifetime figures came from the account discussed, rather than a newly verified model-by-model delivery dataset. The author also considered whether a successor might eventually return.

Moravy was reported to have left that possibility open. A return would require a substantial redesign to reduce manufacturing cost and complexity, rather than simply restarting the same low-volume production lines. An open possibility was not confirmation of an approved replacement programme.

A future “Cyber SUV”?

Tesla’s occasional discussion of a larger vehicle using Cybertruck-inspired styling had encouraged speculation about an eventual Model X successor. Such a vehicle could theoretically offer more space and a newer platform, but no confirmed product specification, launch date or autonomous-driving capability followed from that idea.

At publication, the proposed “Cyber SUV” remained unconfirmed. The original report’s central point was that the Model S and Model X decision involved more than sales volume: future platform-development costs, the use of Fremont space and Tesla’s priorities for robotics and autonomy all formed part of the explanation being discussed.

💶 REFERRAL PROGRAM 🚘

The referral offer described at publication: €500 off a new Tesla.
