Power EV ownership study

When Elon Musk presented Model 3 on 31 March 2016, electric cars were still widely seen as niche products involving significant compromises. Ten years later, the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study reported its highest battery-electric owner satisfaction to date, with Tesla models at the top of the results.

Model 3 leads, followed by Model Y

Model 3 scored 804 points out of 1,000, the highest result in the study, followed by Model Y with 797. The results reflected the appeal of Model 3’s combination of range, performance and technology, alongside Model Y’s broad success as an electric family vehicle.

The launch that changed Tesla

Model 3’s reveal generated remarkable interest. Thousands of people queued outside Tesla stores to place deposits before they had even seen the car. Reservations passed 325,000 within days, signalling substantial demand but also setting the company a major manufacturing challenge.

Turning those reservations into deliveries proved difficult. Model 3’s production ramp was marked by severe problems, which Musk called “production hell”. Excessive automation contributed to bottlenecks, and Tesla resorted to unusual measures, including an additional assembly line in a temporary structure at Fremont.

Financial pressure became intense. Musk later described Tesla as having come within weeks of running out of money, with the company’s future tied to making Model 3 production work.

The turning point

Tesla reached 5,000 Model 3 cars in a week in 2018, an important milestone in the ramp. The manufacturing experience gained through that process helped support international expansion, including factories in China, Texas and Europe, and laid the groundwork for Model Y.

96% would consider another EV

One of the study’s strongest findings was that 96% of battery-electric owners would consider buying another BEV. That measure of loyalty stood out amid slower sales growth and changing incentive programmes. It described consideration of a future purchase, rather than a completed repeat purchase.

Improvements in public charging and quality

Public charging was among the areas showing particularly strong year-on-year improvement. Wider access to Tesla’s Supercharger network helped make charging easier for other brands. The study also reported improvements in quality and reliability, with premium EV owners experiencing fewer problems involving squeaks, rattles, vibrations and driver-assistance systems.

Battery-electric vehicles compared with plug-in hybrids

The study also highlighted a widening satisfaction gap between BEVs and plug-in hybrids, particularly around running costs. Battery-electric cars avoid combustion-engine servicing and have fewer mechanical powertrain components, though they still need maintenance and wear-item replacement.

A lasting change in owner expectations

The results suggested that owners who switch to electric are strongly inclined to stay with it. A decade after its reveal, Model 3 topped the study and represented a manufacturing transformation that helped reshape Tesla. Together with Model Y, it showed how far EV ownership had moved beyond its early niche.

💶 REFERRAL PROGRAMME 🚘

The referral benefit described at publication

Click the following link to apply the referral and order the car through the normal purchase process (or copy and paste it into Google):

https://www.Teslhub.com/Vantaggio

👏 That’s it!

The referral link is also available in our bio under “Buy a Tesla” and in our website menu under the same heading.

🌐 STAY UP TO DATE 📢

If you do not want to miss any news, these are great places to stay up to date.

Join Teslhub Members: a Telegram community where you can talk, ask questions and share Tesla experiences with us and other members.
