Smart Summon<\/strong> is one of Tesla\u2019s more futuristic-looking features: an owner can use the app to bring the car towards them while monitoring its movement. The system has developed over the years, from Summon<\/em> to Smart Summon<\/em> and Actually Smart Summon<\/em>. Despite that progress, the original vision had not yet been fully realised<\/strong> at the time of this report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musk suggested that another significant step was approaching<\/strong>: a version capable of navigating multi-storey car parks<\/strong>, an especially difficult environment for automated vehicle movement. This remained a development target, rather than confirmation that owners could already use it there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The limits of multi-storey car parks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Summon capability described in the report was limited to relatively flat areas<\/strong>, a restricted operating range and owner monitoring through the app. Underground and multi-level garages can have poor or unavailable GPS reception<\/strong>, making localisation more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article linked possible progress to newer versions of Full Self-Driving (FSD)<\/strong>. It referred to FSD V13.2.X release-note plans for destination parking<\/strong>, including multi-storey garages among possible future environments. Such plans did not establish that the feature was ready for public use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SLAM: finding a way without GPS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In that setting, satellite positioning alone would not be enough: cameras and AI would have to provide reliable perception and localisation<\/strong>. The article discussed SLAM\u2014Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping<\/strong>\u2014as a way for a vehicle to build a map of its surroundings in real time<\/strong>, identifying pillars, walls, ramps and obstacles while estimating its position. This explained a possible technical approach, not a confirmed account of Tesla\u2019s implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robot vacuum cleaners use related mapping techniques inside homes, but a car park presents very different requirements. A vehicle must negotiate tight turns, gradients, ramps and pedestrians<\/strong> with sufficient reliability, even where external positioning is unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The role of FSD V14<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Musk said on X that FSD V14 would bring important Smart Summon improvements<\/strong>, particularly at low speeds. The article connected these plans to end-to-end neural networks<\/strong> that interpret the driving scene rather than rely solely on hand-coded instructions. Extending that approach to underground parking would still require reliable perception and decision-making; the architecture alone did not demonstrate that the problem had been solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A potentially useful improvement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If Tesla could extend Summon to multi-storey garages, it could be one of the feature\u2019s most significant improvements<\/strong>. Calling a car from an airport or shopping-centre garage would be useful, provided the system could operate within its supported conditions and required supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At publication, FSD V14 was expected soon in the United States, with improvements to low-speed manoeuvres. For Europe, the timing, regulatory position and eventual form of any such functions remained uncertain<\/strong>. The report did not announce their availability for European owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
