With Grok also heading towards Tesla vehicles at the time, the plan brought together two of Musk\u2019s AI projects: Tesla and xAI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Body and intelligence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla\u2019s Optimus work had focused heavily on the physical side: <strong>movement and mechanical dexterity<\/strong>. Demonstrations showed walking, moving objects, dancing and learning movements from video. Individual demonstrations, however, did not establish that every task could be performed autonomously in everyday conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok was intended to add another layer. Beyond an artificial voice, the aim was to <strong>help Optimus understand more complex natural-language instructions, ask questions and adapt its responses to the surrounding situation<\/strong>. Those were development goals rather than a complete set of proven consumer capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Grok, and what could it change?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grok is an AI language model, comparable in broad terms to ChatGPT<\/strong>. The proposed combination would bring conversational interaction together with Optimus\u2019s physical capabilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Optimus<\/strong> provides physical strength and mobility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grok<\/strong> adds language understanding and conversational interaction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vision was a robot that could take instructions through conversation, without its user having to write complex programs or install a separate application for every task. <strong>Talking to it would become the interface<\/strong>, much as with a personal assistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A shared AI platform?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement suggested <strong>closer integration between Tesla\u2019s hardware and xAI\u2019s conversational AI<\/strong>. The article also raised the possibility of a complete Tesla\u2013xAI merger, referencing Walter Isaacson\u2019s Musk biography. Musk\u2019s vision was AI that could <strong>move, speak and work alongside people<\/strong>, though achieving that reliably would require more than adding a language model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From household help to manual work and everyday interaction, the ambition was substantial. The article compared its possible impact with that of the personal computer in the 1990s.
