A Tesla can use little energy when resting, but several features keep systems active in the background and can gradually reduce the charge available.

Understanding which functions remain active helps you decide which ones you need, particularly if the car will be parked for days while you are away.

Several features have low-battery shut-offs, including the 20% threshold described in the original guide. The exact behaviour depends on the feature and vehicle. Battery management and other essential systems may still use energy, so a shut-off should not be mistaken for a guarantee that the battery cannot run down.

🛡️ Sentry Mode

Sentry Mode is one of the more noticeable sources of parked energy use. It keeps systems awake to monitor the surroundings and record qualifying security events through the cameras.

🔋 The original guide estimated the equivalent of 1.6–3.2 km of indicated range per hour. That is an approximate observation, not a fixed consumption rate for every car or software version.

Use it when the monitoring is useful, and consider location exclusions such as Home or Work where appropriate. Supported controls are available under Controls > Safety > Sentry Mode and in the Tesla app.

☀️ Cabin Overheat Protection

Cabin Overheat Protection can reduce excessive cabin heat after parking. It is a comfort feature and must never be relied on to protect a child, animal or anyone left unattended in the vehicle.

Depending on the vehicle, the available options include:

Off.

No A/C: uses ventilation without air conditioning, where supported.

On: can use air conditioning.

The feature can be managed under Controls > Safety > Cabin Overheat Protection or through supported app controls. The guide described operation for up to 12 hours after leaving the vehicle, subject to battery level and other conditions. In hot weather, active cooling can use a significant amount of energy.

🔌 Keep Accessory Power On

The Spring 2025 software changes introduced a supported option to keep accessory power available after leaving the vehicle, including relevant USB ports, low-voltage outlets and wireless charging. Availability and the outlets affected depend on the model and software.

🔋 The original guide estimated up to one kilometre of indicated range per hour, even without connected devices. Treat that as an approximate reported figure, not a guaranteed maximum.

Enable the option when accessory power is needed and check it afterwards. The setting was described under Controls > Charging > Keep Accessory Power On. Keeping the associated systems awake can increase energy use overnight.

🅿️ Summon Standby

Where available, Summon Standby keeps the relevant vehicle systems ready so that a supported Summon request can start more quickly. That readiness has an energy cost.

🔋 The guide cited an approximate 0.5–1 km of indicated range per hour; actual use varies.

If you rarely use Summon, consider disabling its Standby setting under the relevant Autopilot controls. Feature names and availability differ by vehicle, package, software and market.

📱 Third-party services

Some third-party services linked to a Tesla account can repeatedly request vehicle data or wake the car. Frequent activity can prevent it from resting efficiently, although not every integration behaves in the same way.

Review the services you have connected and their polling or wake-up settings if parked energy use seems unusual. Do not assume the standard Tesla app always displays a specific “Asleep” status; the information available depends on the interface being used.

📆 Scheduled preconditioning

Preparing the cabin and battery before departure can improve comfort and readiness, but it uses energy. When the car is not plugged in, that energy comes from the battery.

Schedules can be managed through the vehicle’s scheduling controls or the app. Match them to the journeys you actually make, and remove schedules that are no longer useful. Connecting to power where practical can reduce the effect on departure charge.

🐾 Dog, Camp and Keep Climate On

These modes are designed to keep selected climate functions running after parking, with different purposes and operating conditions:

Dog Mode maintains the selected cabin temperature and displays a message for passers-by. It still requires the owner to follow the vehicle’s warnings and monitor the situation.

Camp Mode keeps climate and selected cabin functions available for occupants. Its locking behaviour differs from ordinary parking, so check the instructions for your car.

Keep Climate On maintains the selected temperature subject to its operating conditions. Do not assume a universal two-hour duration across all vehicles and software.

All these modes require energy. Choose the one appropriate to the situation and remain aware of battery level and any app or vehicle warnings.

Reducing unnecessary standby use

The useful starting point is to review what you have left running:

Feature

When to review whether it is needed

Sentry Mode

Where you have chosen not to use parking surveillance

Cabin Overheat Protection

When optional cooling is not needed; never rely on it for unattended occupants

Accessory power

When no connected accessory needs power

Summon Standby

If you rarely use Summon

Scheduled preconditioning

When the schedule no longer matches your journeys

Climate modes (Dog, Camp and Keep Climate On)

When their specific purpose is no longer needed, following vehicle warnings

Tesla offers several convenient features while parked, but enabling all of them can reduce available charge, especially overnight or during an extended stay. A feature using energy is not necessarily a fault; the important question is whether that use serves a purpose for you.

If charge falls unusually quickly, review the settings above and disable optional functions you do not need. Persistent or unexplained consumption is a reason to consult the vehicle’s guidance or arrange an assessment rather than assume one particular setting is responsible.

💶 REFERRAL PROGRAM 🚘

The referral offer described at publication: €500 off a new Tesla.
