The proposed first flight would not carry people; instead, <strong>Tesla\u2019s Optimus humanoid robot would be aboard<\/strong>. If the plan succeeded, crewed missions might follow in 2029, although Musk described <strong>2031 as more likely<\/strong>. These were the ambitions discussed when this article was published in March 2025, not a confirmed mission schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Starship: a rocket on an unprecedented scale<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article described Starship as <strong>the largest and most powerful rocket built<\/strong>, quoting a height of <strong>123 metres<\/strong> and payload capacity of up to <strong>150 tonnes<\/strong> for the configuration discussed. It is <strong>central to Musk\u2019s vision<\/strong> of making humanity a multiplanetary species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Development had also involved major setbacks, including prototype losses during test flights from Texas. SpaceX was analysing flight data to understand the failures, while the <strong>Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)<\/strong> required investigation before further flight tests could be authorised. He envisaged robots carrying out essential work on habitats and infrastructure, <strong>preparing for a later human arrival<\/strong>. This was a future scenario, not a demonstration of tasks Optimus had already performed on Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possible roles envisaged for Optimus included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Assembling shelters and life-support structures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping manage water and air recycling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working on food production and resource extraction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A robot <strong>does not need oxygen to breathe<\/strong>, but it would still need to be adapted to Mars\u2019s demanding conditions, including fine dust and extreme temperatures. The absence of human life-support needs does not remove the engineering challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/teslhub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/2-2-1024x576.png\" alt=\"SpaceX, Elon Musk e la corsa a Marte\" class=\"wp-image-3662\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The longer-term space-settlement ambition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX continued developing the system despite the setbacks, using test data to improve the design.
