Improvements in price, range and technology have not removed every question, particularly about batteries, charging infrastructure and maintenance. Understanding those questions makes it easier to judge whether an EV fits your needs.

How long does an EV battery last?

A traction battery serves a different role from a conventional lead-acid starter battery, which is often replaced after around three to five years. EV lithium-ion packs can remain useful for many years; the original guide gave a broad 10–20-year range and noted that manufacturers often offer eight- to ten-year battery warranties with mileage limits. Neither is a promise of a particular service life. Capacity gradually declines, with the rate depending on chemistry, age, use and temperature. The article’s broad 1–2% annual estimate should not be treated as a fixed rule. For a car initially rated at 480 km, a sustained decline at that rate would not support the original example of losing only 15–30 km over a decade. Range loss needs to be assessed against measured capacity and comparable conditions.

Why lithium-ion batteries are widely used

Lithium-ion technology offers several characteristics useful in electric vehicles:

High energy density, allowing a useful driving range from a practical pack size.

Operation across a range of temperatures, supported by the vehicle’s thermal-management system.

Good energy efficiency, helping reduce losses between charging and driving.

A favourable balance of weight, energy storage and vehicle performance compared with less suitable battery technologies.

The questions buyers often ask

Charging infrastructure

Access to public charging remains important, especially for people living in apartments or without their own parking space. Networks have expanded, but a national ratio of charge points to EVs says little about whether the right connector is available near your home or on your regular route. The original guide described Italy’s relatively high provision per electric car; local access and reliability are the more useful checks for an individual buyer.

Range anxiety

Range has improved, but different cars still suit different journeys. The original comparison referred to a Nissan Leaf at around 240 km and longer-range Tesla versions at up to roughly 600 km. Model year, battery version, test cycle and driving conditions are essential to interpreting those numbers. A long-range specification is not a promise of that distance on every journey.

Battery replacement costs

The guide quoted a broad replacement-cost estimate of €5,000–€20,000, varying with pack size and manufacturer. A repair, refurbished pack and new complete battery can have very different costs, so an individual quotation matters more than a generic range. It also cited battery-price estimates falling from €1,160/kWh in 2010 to €128/kWh in 2022, with a forecast near €90/kWh by 2031. Those historical estimates and forecasts are not a current installed replacement price.

Helping a battery last

Several everyday habits can reduce avoidable stress on a traction battery. Three areas are particularly useful to consider:

Choose an appropriate charge limit: The original guide suggested keeping charge between 20% and 80%, but the right daily limit depends on the battery chemistry and the manufacturer’s instructions. Follow the recommendation displayed by your vehicle, especially for versions with different charging guidance.

Use charging that suits the journey: Slower charging can be convenient for routine use, while DC fast charging is valuable on longer trips. Heat, charging behaviour and battery management affect ageing; occasional rapid charging does not by itself establish that a battery will fail early.

Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures where practical: Shade in very hot weather and sheltered parking in winter can help, while the car’s own thermal management plays an important role.

Putting battery myths in perspective

Outdated assumptions about range, life expectancy and environmental impact can discourage buyers unnecessarily. Recycling can recover valuable battery materials, but technical recyclability is not the same as every material being recovered in every facility. Understanding improvements and their limits gives a better basis for judging long-term reliability.

Are EV batteries covered by a warranty?

Many manufacturers offer battery warranties lasting around eight to ten years or subject to a mileage limit. The historical guide gave roughly 100,000–200,000 km as a broad example; the exact cover, capacity threshold and exclusions depend on the model and warranty. A battery may remain useful beyond its warranty, but a life of 20 years is not guaranteed.

What affects battery life most?

Charging habits, temperature exposure, age and use all matter. Appropriate daily charge limits and care can reduce avoidable stress, but cannot eliminate ageing. Follow the guidance for the actual battery chemistry and vehicle.

How much range can an EV battery provide?

The original guide cited a broad 250–700 km range under favourable conditions and a rough 1–2% annual capacity-loss estimate. These are not universal specifications: range and ageing vary, and advertised 1,000 km future technologies are not proof of a product already available. Read the related article.

Battery technology continues to develop, making EVs an increasingly useful option for many drivers. Choosing a vehicle still means matching its charging needs, range and warranty to your circumstances, rather than relying on either the most optimistic claim or the most alarming myth.

💶 REFERRAL PROGRAM 🚘

The referral offer described at publication: €500 off a new Tesla.
